What’s with the Communion wafers? The worship staff has been getting this question a lot. Yes, they are different; very crunchy, don’t absorb any wine, loud. Why did we change? I want to write a bit about that change in this blog post, to clarify a few things and hopeful shed some light on why this change should be seen as a reflection of the inclusive grace of God and not just a random new thing. For some time, to have Communion at St. Olaf, we needed a lot of dishes, A LOT! Before we got our new pottery communion ware, we had to have six chalices (two wine, two juice, two for gluten free) and four pattens (two for standard wafers, two for gluten free). This caused some issues. Not many people are comfortable carrying two chalices (the communion assistants) so we were having trouble finding people to help.
